Chennai, October 2: On Saturday, a mother and daughter died of asphyxiation as smoke invaded their room following an AC unit burst in their Ambattur home. Police believe that power fluctuations may have prompted the explosion. The victims were identified as R Hasina Begum, 50, and her daughter Nazriya, 16, of Menambedu, near Ambattur. Neighbours broke into the residence at 5 am on Saturday after noticing smoke coming from the windows. The mom and her daughter were discovered unconscious in the smoke-filled apartment. According to authorities, the fire destroyed clothing and furniture.

Both were taken to the hospital. While doctors proclaimed Hasina Begum dead, they discovered Nazriya alive and attempted to resuscitate her. However, she died as a result of her injuries.
