New Delhi, August 21: A new pillar with busts of V D Savarkar, Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose atop it was installed in Delhi University North Campus on Monday night. This new addition has come up at DU by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)-led Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), which is the students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Explaining the reason for installing this statue, ABVP leader and DUSU president Shakti Singh said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "There is a cellar on campus where Bhagat Singh was kept during the trial. We had demanded that either a statue of Bhagat Singh be erected or the cellar be made public. But DU admin didn't respond to us. So we had no other option but to do this." Adding on, he even claimed that they had asked the university officials to set up the monument in last November, this March, April and again in August. However, the administration didn't pay heed to it. If someone looks into the plaque on the pillar, one can even see DUSU president Shakti Singh's name as the 'installer'.
Earlier on Monday night, the pillar came up overnight and DUSU’s even clarified that it was set up without permission from university authorities. The incident took place at around 2 am, when ABVP activists set up the statue outside the gate.
Both the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the left-wing All India Students’ Association (AISA) have criticised the installation of the pillar, particularly for the installation of Savarkar’s bust.
