New Delhi, Oct 1: Days after the Supreme Court struck down provisions of the Aadhaar Act which allowed private companies to use biometric information for user authentication, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has asked telecom operators to submit a plan for stopping the Aadhaar-based verification of their customers.
The apex court has asked all telecom service providers (TSPs) to comply with the top court verdict, dated September 26, 2018. As per the judicial order, only the government can use Aadhaar for extending subsidies to the beneficiaries. Justice DY Chandrachud Dissents With Majority Judgment, Holds Aadhaar Unconstitutional.
The TSPs have been asked to submit their alternative authentication plan by October 15. Once the plan is submitted to the UIDAI, the nodal Aadhaar body will scrutinise it, and recommend amendments if necessitated.
“In order to ensure smooth discontinuation...there are certain requirements which are there under the Aadhaar regulations...so the companies are in the best position to know what exactly is needed and they can submit their plan by October 15," UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey told news agency PTI.
"If any additional requirements are to be done from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India ) side, we will tell them after receipt of their plan," he added.
In a landmark judgement last week, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra upheld the legal validity of Aadhaar Act, but struck down Section 57 of the law which allowed private companies to use the 12-digit biometric ID-based eKYC.
