Aadhaar For Children: UIDAI Tells Schools to Provide Enrollment Facility to Students, Says No Child Should be Denied Admission For Lack of Aadhaar
The Aadhaar issuing body said it is the responsibility of schools to provide Aadhaar enrollment and update facility to students and ensure no children are deprived/denied of admission and other facilities. The UIDAI further stated that any such denials are invalid and not permitted under the law.
New Delhi, Sep 5: In a major relief to students, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Wednesday clarified that schools cannot deny admission and other facilities to any student due to lack of Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar issuing body said it is the responsibility of schools to provide Aadhaar enrollment and update facility to students and ensure no children are deprived/denied of admission and other facilities. The UIDAI further stated that any such denials are invalid and not permitted under the law.
According to an official circular addressed to the Chief Secretaries of States, the UIDAI has said that it is aware of instances where some schools are refusing admission in absence of Aadhaar. “It must be ensured that no children are deprived/denied of their due benefits or rights for want of Aadhaar,” the circular stated.
The UIDAI has also exhorted schools to coordinate with local banks, post offices, state education department and district administration, to facilitate special camps in their premises for Aadhaar enrolment and the updation process.
The recent development has brought a major relief to parents and students who have been facing difficulties due to schools insisting on Aadhaar number during admission. The UIDAI has said that till Aadhaar number is assigned or biometrics are updated for such students all facilities should be extended through alternate means of identification.
