Gandhinagar, May 20: In a tragic incident, a woman died by suicide after jumping into the Sabarmati river after her in-laws kept pressuring her to become a 'sati'. The police found the suicide note wherein she accused her in-laws and booked them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to a report published by the Times of India, the deceased was identified as Sangita Lakhra, a native of Bhilwada in Rajasthan. According to the note found by the police, the in-laws were consistently harassing the 28-year-old after her husband died in an accident on February 10 last year. The reports said that the woman went missing on May 10 and her body was fished out early next morning.
The father of the deceased filed a complaint against Sangita's mother-in-law and four others of domestic violence and abetting suicide. In his complaint, the 47-year-old grocery trader alleged that Sangita had been battling depression for a year due to constant harassment. The report added that Sangeeta, a software engineer, moved to her maternal home in Surat after her husband's death. She later moved back to her parents' house. She had started working at a mall in Vesu last month. A case has been registered against all accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act.
