2002 Gujarat Riots: Naroda Patiya Massacre Convict Babu Bajrangi Granted Bail on Health Grounds

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to Babu Bajrangi, one of the convicts in Naroda Patiya matter.

New Delhi, March 7: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to Babu Bajrangi, one of the convicts in Naroda Patiya matter. Bajrangi who has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, was granted bail on the health grounds. According to Bajrangi's medical reports, the former Bajrang Dal leader is suffering from a 100 per cent vision loss besides other ailments. Bajrangi has been lodged at Sabarmati Central Jail since 2012 with 30 other convicts, including former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Maya Kodnani.

Babubhai Patel, popularly known as Babu Bajrangi, was convicted over the killing of 97 Muslims by rioting mobs in Naroda Patiya area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad. Bajrani was sentenced to life imprisonment without release. The State High Court in April, 2018, upheld the conviction. In the top court, the latter had challenged the high court's verdict, which had taken into account "extrajudicial confessions" which he made during a sting operation.
