Ahmedabad, August 27: A special SIT court in Ahmedabad on Monday convicted two people and acquitted three others in a case related to the burning of Sabarmati Express in 2002 in Godhra. The five accused - Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi, Faruk Dhantiya, Faruk Bhana and Imran alias Sheru Bhatuk - were arrested in 2015-16 and were put on trial by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The court has convicted Farukh Bhana and Imran alias Sheru Batik for conspiracy while Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi and Faruk Dhantiya have been acquitted.

On February 27, 2002, the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was set ablaze and 59 passengers were charred to death at Godhra station in Gujarat. The victims included 27 women and 10 children. The incident had led to widespread communal riots in Gujarat.
