Thane, Feb 4: The state government has approved the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) proposal to set-up a state-of-the-art facility parking lot here on a 6.25 acre plot reserved for the Transport Department.

Making the announcement, Thane's Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde said the parking lot will resolve the city's traffic woes to a significant extent.

The plot is located in Balkum area of Thane, which serves as a gateway for vehicles entering from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Thane residents believe the parking lot will decongest Thane, as the large vehicles used by logistic and transport companies would be parked at the depots, rather than the roads, during non-operational hours.

School buses, which also cause traffic woes while being parked on roads, are also expected to be lodged at the depots when they are not ferrying students.

Thane, located next door to Mumbai, is one of the most bustling cities of Maharashtra, with a population amounting to nearly 30 lakhs. The city acts as a gateway for large number of vehicles going towards Mumbai from Bhiwandi, Ambernath, Palghar and other adjoining regions.
