Bhubaneswar, April 8: Passengers on board the Ahmedabad-Puri Express had a narrow escape on Saturday after the train moved 10-km down slope from the Titlagarh station without the engine.

Two officials were suspended by the Eastern Railways for failing to apply the skid brakes. A further inquiry will be conducted to penalise all those involved in the faux pas, a Railway spokesperson said.

The incident happened at 10 pm on Saturday, after the train lodged at Titlagarh station was scheduled to move towards Ahmedabad.

After seeing the train moving downwards with no engine intact, the Railway workers and officials swung into action, taking all possible steps to the stop the moving coaches.

An engine was fitted to the train at the site where it halted. Subsequently, the journey was commenced towards Ahmedabad.

"All passengers are safe and no one was hurt when the coaches moved towards Kesinga after the engine was detached to be attached at the other end of the train," an East Coast Railway spokesperson told PTI.

The incident comes in the backdrop of a series of steps taken by the Railways to contain the spree of derailment incidents over the past couple of years. The efforts paid yield as the least number of accidents in the past two decades were recorded in 2017-18, as per the data released by the government. However, the casualties recorded were still high.
