Ahead of the Assembly Elections in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to farmers in the state, which was broadcasted on his NaMo App. Modi further informed how his government is taking massive steps for reforms in the agricultural sector and took the pledge to double farmers' income by 2022.
Among all the statements made by Modi where he accused Congress led Siddaramaiah of deceiving the farmers, he made one bizarre statement as well. He said, that when a girl is born in the family of a farmer, they should plant a special tree, so that by the time, the girl reaches her marriageable age, they can cut the tree and all the marriage related expenses will come out of it." This didn't go down well with the people as they accused PM of his sexist remark, promoting dowry.
Kisaan ko apne khet mein aise ped lagaane ki swantantra ho jisse uski aye mein badhotri ho. Kisaan ke ghar mein jab beti paida ho, uss time woh ek aisa ped lagaade toh jab beti shaadi hogi, uss time jab woh ped kaatega toh shaadi ka kharcha uss ek ped se nikal jayega: PM Modi pic.twitter.com/s1WApAdY2r

Twitter Reactions to Modi's comment:
In 2011, Modi had said something similar, he was quoted saying to the farmers, "Plant 5 trees to celebrate a daughter's birth, they will fetch you the funds for her marriage...shared my mind with farmer friends.

It looks like ahead of the Karnataka Elections, BJP is going all out to criticize Congress and woo the voters.
