Nagaland Assembly Elections Marred With Violence, At Least One Person Killed in Clashes in Akuluto

Kohima, Feb 27: Instances of violence were reported in parts of Nagaland on Tuesday, when 59 of the 60 assembly segments in the state went to polls. According to reports, two separate clashes erupted between the workers of Naga People's Front (NPF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the cadres of NPF and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Akuloto region, located in Zunheboto district.

At least one person was killed in the clashes, confirmed the state’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer Moa Aie. The victim was reportedly shot in the chest from a close range.

At least two more people were reported to be injured in the incidents of violence which broke out in Dimapur district. A grenade packed in bottle was hurled at a police station in Dhansiripar, which left one person injured.

Another injury was reported in Mon district, where a minor intensity blast was carried out at a polling station.

In wake of the violence, prohibitory orders were issued in Dhansiripar sub-division under Dimapur district, with assembly of more than five people banned. Security was also beefed up across all polling booths in the region.

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Longleng and Phek, where violent protests were seen since Sunday, continued on the day of polling as well.

Despite the polling day being marred with violence, a total of 67 percent voter turnout was recorded till 3 pm.
