Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Case: SC Reprimands Bihar Government, Says Brajesh Thakur Is Obstructing Probe

Bihar, October 25: Supreme Court has today reprimanded the Bihar government for their incapability in handling the horrific Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case. According to an ANI report, the Apex Court said, "Brajesh Thakur, main accused in Muzaffarpur shelter home case appears to be a very influential person and is obstructing the investigation. Supreme Court has asked Bihar government and CBI to file a response as to why Chandra Shekhar Verma, husband of former Bihar minister Manju Verma, has not been arrested yet. SC has further issued a show cause notice to Thakur seeking his reply as to why he should not be shifted out of jail in Bihar to jail in some other state. Manju Verma resigned on August 8 following allegations that Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the Muzaffarpur case, had links with her husband. Earlier this month, Patna High Court rejected Verma' s bail plea. CBI informed the Supreme Court that a skeleton of a 15-year-old girl was recovered from a cremation ground. The skeleton was found after interrogating the main accused Brajesh Thakur's driver.
The agency has frozen 20 bank accounts of Thakur, who has been lodged in the Muzaffarpur Central Jail since June 2. It has also arrested three staffers of Thakur. Of the 42 girls lodged at the short-stay home run by Thakur's NGO, 34 were found to have been sexually assaulted. The crime came to light after a social audit by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. The shelter home has since been sealed.
