Though rain brought some respite from the hot climate, however on the first day of its arrival itself it left the city to a complete standstill. Heavy traffic was observed on highways, even news of water-logging on railway tracks was reported. Subsequently, the train services were affected. The central route trains reportedly are running late by almost 20 minutes, while the western line trains have badly been affected. Moreover, due to flooding, the Mumbai Traffic department has diverted routes to provide some assistance from traffic congestion.
Meanwhile, the typical water logging areas of Mumbai ---Parel, Hindamata Dadar, Elphinstone, Worli saw flooding this year also despite BMC tall claims that they have done micro-planning and there won't be more complaints. In addition, they claimed from 225 identified flooding spots there will no water logging complaints on 120 places. However, the same kind of flooding picture turned down all tall claims of BMC.
As Parel area is extremely flooded the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Team have been deployed at Hindamata and various other places to assist people. Also, the team are carrying people in rubber tube boats, who are left stranded. According to the information from Mumbai's civic body disaster management cell the city has received 75-95 cm rainfall in the last 12 hours. Also, in just 30-minutes of the recent downpour, roads in several areas, including Mahim, Hindmata, Parel and Marine Drive, were flooded.
Besides all this the Navy personnel have also been kept at standby in Colaba, Worli, Ghatkopar, Trombay, Malad to carry out flood rescue operation if necessitated, the BMC mentioned in its earlier press release.
The IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for next four days in Mumbai. "Increased rainfall activity over coastal Karnataka, Goa and south Maharashtra is likely to continue till June 10. It is very likely to extend to north coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, from tomorrow. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in these regions is very likely during this period," the IMD press release states.
The rainfall will eventually see a decline from June 12 onward. Meanwhile during heavy rainfall as a precautionary measure, the authority has asked people not to move out of their houses, until an emergency. It has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
