Mumbai, June 15: The Indian Metrological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in Konkan belt including Mumbai on June 17 and June 18. According to the weather forecast, heavy to very heavy showers which had receded from June 12 will return on June 17. Ajay Kumar, a scientist from IMD Mumbai, said that isolated heavy rain could be expected over Konkan on June 17 and heavy to very heavy rain on June 18. “There is circulation in the North Arabian area which could cause showers in the city,” he said as quoted by the Times of India. Mumbai falls under the Konkan belt.
Furthermore, the maximum temperature recorded in Mumbai city and suburb was 34-degree Celsius and minimum of 28 degrees in last 24 hours on Friday as per the BMC's disaster management cell.
Mumbai witnessed the arrival of monsoon on June 9, when the city also saw heavy rainfall. The IMD alerted about heavy downpour from June 9 to 11, and several parts of Mumbai were flooded, as was predicted. The city and suburban regions recorded around 100 mm of rainfall on this day. The low-lying areas of Mumbai were waterlogged. These included Hindamata of Dadar, Dadar TT, Parel TT, Mahim, Worli, Sion 24 road, Dharavi and King circle. Following the high alert, BMC roped in navy, NDRF to be pressed into service during an emergency situation.
To tackle the waterlogging situation in Mumbai about 3,000 BMC workers were pressed into service.
