Mumbai, Sep 3: Thousands of people use local train services to travel from one place to another in Mumbai. However, crowded local trains have turned into a nightmare for many, and claim several lives in a year. According to the data released by the Government Railway Police (GRP), over 400 people have died due to falling off from crowded local trains so far in 2018.

As many as 406 people have died after falling off from Mumbai local trains from January to July 31 this year, reported Hindustan Times. Besides, 871 people suffered serious injuries just seven months. Notably, the number of casualties has increased this year. Last year, 360 people lost their lives after falling off local trains till July, and 654 people died through the year.

“There are infrastructure problems leading to overcrowding in local trains, which is a serious issue and can only be solved by increasing train services," Anoop Shukla, senior divisional security commissioner (DSC ), Railway Protection Force (RPF) told a leading daily. In 2011, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation Limited recommended several means to decongest suburban trains.

The suggestions include the introduction of 12 and 15-car rakes, cab signalling, and a Communication Based Train Control (CBDT). However, the Central and Western railways only introduced 12 and 15-car rakes.
