Mumbai Fire: 29,140 Fire Mishaps Reported in 6 Years in Maximum City, Reveals RTI
The increasing number of fire mishaps in the city has led to questions being raised on the Mumbai fire safety department.
Mumbai, June 13: Repeated incidents of fire have been reported in Mumbai in the recent past. In the most recent one, a massive fire erupted in one of the posh 33 storeyed high-rise apartment named BeauMonde located in Prabhadevi of South Bombay (SoBo). No casualty has been reported in the Level-III fire.
This comes even as high rise buildings have been mandated to have fire safety equipment to avoid such accidents. Mumbai based activist Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh has ascertained information through Right To Information (RTI) act, which reveals that about 29,140 fire mishaps have been reported across Mumbai in the past six years. The data has been provided to the activist by Mumbai Fire Brigade senior officer AV Parab. According to the RTI details, the 29140 cases of fire were reported between 2012 and 2018.
In the Year 2012-13, 4765 cases of fire occurred, in which almost 62 people lost their lives, and 177 people sustained burn injuries. In the year 2014-15, total 4842 cases were reported in which 32 people were killed, and 125 got injured and 31 were fire brigade jawans got injured while dousing the fire. In the year 2016-17 around 5021 fire mishaps occurred, and around 34 people died and 115 people got burn injuries. Out of the injured people, 13 people were fire brigade officers.
Similarly, in the year 2017-18, around 4927 fire accidents were reported. In this year of fire accidents, 55 people died, and 219 people got injured. Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh, the activist slammed the civic body over the fire safety negligence.
The increasing number of fire mishaps in the city has led to questions being raised on the Mumbai fire safety department. Buildings have to first obtain the fire safety certificate which is approved by the fire officials after they conduct a check. However, the Kamala Mills fire which claimed 14 lives exposed the rising irregularities in the department and the corruption within.
