The new name came into effect from the midnight of July 18.

Last year, Elphinstone Road station came to spotlight after a stampede which broke out on August 29, 2017, claiming 23 lives and injuring over 50 commuters. Following the stampede, the government roped in the Army to built a new foot-over-bridge which could provide more space to the passengers changing routes.

Elphinstone Road is one of the oldest stations in Mumbai, built by the British regime in 1867. This is the second major stop on the local railway to be renamed. On July 1, 2017, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Notably, the station was known as Victoria Terminus till 1996.
