Mumbai, June 28: Soon a QR code system will be made compulsory in all taxis and autorickshaws in Mumbai. The system will help passengers scan and get details of the driver, his licence/permit details, contact number and vehicle information with a smartphone. It will also help the passengers file a complaint during distress to the Mumbai police using this code. Joint Commissioner of Police, Mumbai Amitesh Kumar said to the Times of India that the proposed QR code would also provide the option for passengers to call Mumbai police helpline number during emergencies. It will be helpful especially to solo passengers after instances of women being harassed in autos and taxis have increased in recent times.

He further stated that only the vehicles that have the QR code would be considered legal. And the drivers who don't carry the stickers, will not be allowed to fill fuel at Mahanagar Gas Limited Petro Pumps, which will affect them directly and force them to carry the code. Besides this, the move will also help eliminate the illegal vehicles and ensure the safety of women in the city.

The funding of the project, amounting up to Rs. 2 crore, will be taken up by the state government.  A team of experts is working on the proposal, designing a special QR code and a mobile application. Source in the auto union has welcomed the move. They believe that introducing QR code will help decrease the ratio of illegal vehicles plying on the roads. Currently, in Mumbai, there are 30, 000 illegal taxis and autos.

Auto union leader Thamby Kurien was quoted as saying, "A QR code can efficiently store a lot of data which can be revealed as being scanned. But the authorities must ensure that maximum CNG outlets and their attendants have scanners for QR codes. If there is no scanner, illegally run autos will enter the pump, and the drivers will get the vehicle refuelled."
