Bengaluru/Chennai/Vijayawada, Aug 20: After Kerala, monsoon rains have crippled normal life in several districts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. In Karnataka, areas such as Somawarpet, Suntikoppa, Mukkodlu and Madapur have been witnessing heavy rains since August 14. In Tamil Nadu, flood alert was sounded for 13 districts on Sunday.
Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday conducted an aerial survey of Somawarpet, Suntikoppa, Mukkodlu, Madapur, Harangi, Siddapura, Kushalnagar and surrounding areas to take stock of the situation. More than 3,500 people were rescued in Kodagu district, where six people lost their lives in floods and landslides in the past few days.
Major rivers, including Cauvery, were in spate in Tamil Nadu, inundating low-lying areas along the banks. Due to inflows from Karnataka, heavy discharges were being made from dams, which led to flooding in low-lying areas. According to official data, nearly 14,000 people have been shifted to relief camps in different districts so far in the state.
In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains disrupted normal life on Sunday in Vijayawada and other parts of Krishna district, Eluru in West Godavari and Visakhapatnam district. Heavy rains caused water-logging and disrupted traffic. Educational institutes were closed on Monday following heavy rains forecast in both Krishna and West Godavari districts.
According to Skymet, a private weather forecast agency, heavy rains are likely over many parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Monday, while Coastal Karnataka and Kerala may witness moderate rainfall. Interior Tamil Nadu is likely to witness light rains today, the agency predicted.
