Kolkata, July 31: While Mumbai recorded the highest July rainfall, Kolkata has seen the driest month in the last decade. The city has recorded a rain deficit of 56 percent till Tuesday, with 159.7mm rain in July, which is far below the count of 361 mm. According to a Times of India report, delayed onset of monsoon and lack of low-pressure systems have triggered the dry spell. Mumbai Weather Forecast: IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall Till Weekend.

It is only a few days that the city has started receiving intermittent spell of rains, and it is not sufficient to overcome the rainfall deficit. In the month of June, Kolkata had seen a deficit of 58 per cent rain.

Maharashtra has been lashed by torrential rains since last Friday, leading to water-logging and flood-like situation in several areas, including Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur among others. Mumbai has recorded the highest July rains in the last 112 years. July rainfall for Mumbai has been highest since 1908 while for Thane and Pune, it is since 1901. Mumbai's July total rainfall till 28th was 1,492mm, which was only 8mm short of the highest ever—1,500mm, recorded on July 1907.

The weather department has further predicted that Mumbai will continue to experience heavy rains till this weekend.
