Mob in Chhattisgarhs's Surguja Lynches Mentally Unstable Youth to Death Over Child-Lifting Rumours
The mob lynching incident in Chhattisgarh comes days after two youths in Assam's Karbi Anglong region were killed on suspicion of being child-abductors.
Raipur, June 24: A mob in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district lynched a mentally unstable youth to death on suspicion of child-lifting. The incident was reported from Mendakalan village, located close to the tribal belt of Ambikapur.
Superintendent of Police Sadanand Kumar, while speaking to reporters, said locals in parts of Ambikapur region have been gripped with panic over the presence of a child-lifting gang which is aiming to abduct their children and sell their kidneys.
On Friday, the locals spotted the mentally challenged youth in Mendakalan village. On being quizzed about his whereabouts, the victim failed to give answers. This further fueled the suspicion of villagers who assaulted him with bamboo sticks.
By the time the local police arrived at the spot, the youth had succubmed to the injuries.
"After this incident, the police will take more effective steps to counter rumour-mongering. We will also organise campaigns to make people aware and alert," the SP was quoted as saying by TOI.
The administration in Surguja and neighbouring districts in the tribal belt is planning to organise 'munadi', a form of drum-beating awareness programme, warning the people against heeding to rumours of child-lifting.
