The trends are suggestive that the BJP along with its alliance will form the government in Meghalaya. The party is believed to come up with the majority following negotiations with regional parties and Independent candidates like they did in Manipur and Goa. Congress suffered a major setback in Meghalaya which despite having more numbers could not get the necessary margin. The results of Meghalaya Assembly Elections 2018 will be declared today. The counting of the vote begins at 8 am, thereafter the early trends will start pouring in. Polling for the assembly elections in the state was held on February 27 along with the north-eastern state of Nagaland. Meghalaya voted to elect 59 of 60 members to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. An estimated 84.86 percent polling was recorded in Meghalaya, said State Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor. He added that 15,35,846 voters out of the total 18.09 lakh electorate exercised their franchise in 59 constituencies. The highest turnout was recorded at Mookaiaw constituency where 93.21 per cent voters exercised their franchise. Kharkongor said that the least polling was registered in North Shillong which witnessed 60.79 per cent polling. In each polling station of Meghalaya, 'early voter medals' were given to the first five voters to encourage more voter participation.

In the 2013 assembly elections, Meghalaya recorded a voter turnout of 86.82% and Nagaland 90.19 percent. Although Meghalaya has a 60-member legislative assembly, 59 seats went to polls on Tuesday as the polling in Williamnagar was adjourned following the death of a candidate from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma died in a militant attack last week.

While Meghalaya and Nagaland went to polls on February 27, Tripura voted on February 17. The assembly election in all the three Northeastern states is crucial for both national as well as regional players. After gaining dominance in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking to expand its prominence in rest of the Northeast region. Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is also heavily banking on Meghalaya to regain its crumbling strength in the hilly region.
