The counting of votes for the Meghalaya Assembly 2018 Elections which began at 8am has concluded and results are expected shortly. As the Congress Party is leading with a low margin in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may form an alliance with other political parties. Meghalaya Chief Minister and Congress candidate Mukul Sangma won from both Ampati and Songsak constituencies, EC sources said. Sangma, who is the chief minister since 2010 retained his Ampati seat. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Bakul Ch Hajong by over 6,000 votes.

The state went to polls along with Nagaland on February 27. Meghalaya witnessed a voter turnout of 84.86 percent. Find below the list of constituency-wise results of Meghalaya along with the names of winning candidates and their respective parties. Congress has been ruling in Meghalaya for the past ten years, while BJP is a marginal player there. However, after gaining grounds in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Mizoram, BJP is looking at expanding its territory in the rest of the northeastern region. The party has been largely focusing on the states lately.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who visited Meghalaya twice in the past one month and campaigned in Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills regions, had told IANS: "We have the people's support and I am confident we will retain power in Meghalaya." The National People's Party (NPP) of Conrad Sangma, son of former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma has partnered with BJP's partner in the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). Regional parties play a key role in Meghalaya. The Congress which is ruling the state for a decade has fielded candidates in all 60 seats of which 50 went to polls.

However, seven of their legislators quit and is with BJP's partners. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that he is confident of Congress winning on more seats than 2013 elections. Meanwhile, the BJP which has fielded 47 candidates also expressed confidence in winning with a good number of seats.
