Kolkata, June 13: In a recent case of medical negligence, a woman has been infused with the blood of a wrong group during surgery, while she was admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital. According to an ANI report, the woman was admitted to the hospital on June 5. The woman's husband Abhijit Saha has been quoted as saying, "Her lungs and kidneys are damaged. The administration is threatening to stop treatment if I don't pay bills. I have already paid Rs 2.5 lakh bill."
The patient was allegedly transfused with AB+ blood group during the operation, instead of her A+ blood. This led to multi-organ failure in the patient. However, Columbia Asia Hospital has denied the report.
Dr. Tirthankar Bagchi of Columbia Asia Hospitals as quoted in the ANI report said, “Someone might have called the patient’s husband for the outstanding bill, but it was not that management who had forced him. If someone has done something wrong, it will be investigated."
The doctor further informed that the patient is doing better now, but she is still under observation. A team has been formed by our head office in Bengaluru to find out if she was infused with the blood of a wrong group.
Abhijit has also reached out to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for help, asking for strict action against the authorities. Reportedly, the hospital has been in the news previously as well for forcing a woman to stay in the hospital for non-payment of the bills.
