Nanded, June 30: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a lady patient with a broken leg was dragged with the help of a bedsheet by her relatives, allegedly due to unavailability of a stretcher at a government hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded here on Thursday. The video of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, a woman could be seen being dragged by two of her relatives in Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital.
Soon after the video surfaced, the hospital started receiving flak for their lack of basic facilities. Reflecting on the same, Dr. Chandrakant Mhaske, Dean of Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital, said that they had initiated an inquiry into the incident. "We have ordered an inquiry into the incident. But, as per officials present there, the patient was told a stretcher was about to get free. However, her relatives did not wait and took her," he told ANI.
Last year, Dana Manjhi, a labourer from Odisha trekked for 10 km carrying the dead body of his wife. In a similar incident which occurred last year, a man from Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh carried the dead body of his niece on a bicycle after an ambulance was not provided to him by hospital authorities. Last week, doctors of Ganga Ram hospital had declared a 60-year-old man from Haryana’s Panipat as dead, even though he was alive.
According to media reports, this year in March, an amputated leg of a patient is used as a pillow at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had also issued a notice to the medical college authorities.
