Hardcastle Restaurants, the master franchisee for the McDonalds outlets, is planning to reuse cooking oils by converting them into biodiesel. The restaurant chain will be using the fuel to run its refrigerated delivery trucks, a said report in the PTI. After piloting the project in Mumbai, Hardcastle now plans to start it at Bengaluru as well. Vikram Ogale, the director of supply chain and quality assurance, Hardcastle Restaurants told reporters, “We will soon bring all our 277 outlets under the recycling programme.”
The company teamed up with Unicon Biofuels for this ambitious project last year and has 85 McDonald’s city restaurant under it. Under the project, over 35,000 litres of biodiesel have been converted every month. Ogale believes that the converted biodiesel will be cleaner alternative, that will emit 75 percent less carbon than diesel in its entire life cycle.
The president of the Biodiesel Association of India, Sandeep Chaturvedi also endorsed Hardcastle’s endeavour, saying that both McDonalds and Unicon have been working in unison to convert the cooking oil, as per the Bureau of Indian Standards. He encouraged all the food companies to take a leaf from McDonald’s book and adopt it to their business model.
