Mumbai, July 28: A Maratha outfit on Saturday demanded resignation from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis minister Chandrakant Patil for failing to announce reservation for the community in government colleges and jobs. The Sakal Maratha Samaj further threatened to launch Jail Bharo Andolan if their demands including reservation are not fulfilled.

"We demand apology and resignation from CM and minister Chandrakant Patil. We also demand Rs 50 Lakh compensation for families of deceased and action against cops who baton charged at women. If these demands are not met we'll launch Jail Bharo Andolan from August 1," the outfit said after an all-party meeting chaired by Fadnavis himself.

"We don't trust the government. They should take a decision, we don't want any further discussions with them," the Maratha outfit added. After the all-party meeting, Fadnavis said a special assembly session would be called to discuss Maratha reservation demand. He appealed the community to cooperate and maintain law and order in the state.

"We have requested Backward commission to submit its report, and then we'll convene a special assembly session," Fanavis told media persons. "I have instructed the DGP that cases registered against people, participating in protests, should be withdrawn. Only the serious cases like attacking police personnel, indulging in arson etc. will not be taken back," he added.

"The government had framed a law for Maratha reservation, but High Court stayed that. We realised it's a special situation and reservation can be given only on the recommendation of the Backward commission. Unfortunately, commission's first chairman died. We appointed a new chairman. This all took time," Fadnavis explained.

A policeman and four others were injured, four persons attempted suicide, over a dozen vehicles damaged or torched, road and rail links blocked while an MP and MLC were roughed up, as the stir for the Maratha quota turned violent in parts of Maharashtra on July 24.
