Kolkata, September 6: In a tragic incident, a portion of a 40-year-old Majherhat bridge collapsed in South Kolkata on Tuesday. Several people and vehicles were trapped inside the debris. According to the latest reports, the number of casualties stands at three and people injured in the incident is more than 25. Clearance work is currently underway to clear the debris. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cut short her trip to the Hills and has ordered a probe by a “high-power committee” and has said that action would be taken against those whose negligence has caused the disaster.

The Majherhat bridge collapse is the third such incident in the last six years in Kolkata. Tuesday's incident revived the dreadful memory of the Posta flyover collapse here two years ago. Twenty-six people were killed when the under-construction Vivekananda Flyover collapsed in the city's Posta area on March 31, 2016.
