Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as “Bapu” led the Indian freedom struggle. He followed the path of non-violence to fight against the British Rule. Satyagraha was among key principles to which Bapu stayed loyal till the end. Gandhi is credited with bringing Indians together during the British era, giving them a sense of belongingness. Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Gujarat's Porbandar. This year, the country will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Bapu.

Mahatma Gandhi is also a political icon who is revered across the party lines in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always ensured that the ideals of the Father of the Nation should be held high in the country as well as abroad. PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat campaign is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. On January 30 this year, the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial was dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister. The United Nations General Assembly commemorated Gandhi's values and the principles he followed by voting to establish October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence on June 15, 2007.
