Mumbai, August 27: The Maharashtra government has announced that flouting noise pollution norms in Mumbai's silent zones will make your pay Rs 1 lakh fine and impose a jail term of five years. According to a News18 report, ahead of the festive season, the state government has urged the citizens to come forward and register complaints in police stations if they come across any violation of noise pollution norms in the city's silent zones. In order to complain, people can dial the police helpline number 100.

More than 110 areas in Mumbai have been shortlisted as silent zones. The areas cover all government and private hospital, nursing homes, schools, colleges as well as courts. The statement from the government read, "If there is a violation of noise pollution norms in these 110 places, it would invite imprisonment up to five years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh." A decibel limit has been set in the areas, for example, during the day, the noise level in these silent zones cannot exceed 50 decibels and 40 decibels during the night. The report further stated the noise level in industrial areas, which is 75 decibel during the day and 70 decibels at night. In commercial areas, it is 65 decibel during the day, and 55 decibels at night. In residential areas, it is 55 decibel during the day and 45 decibels at night.
