Mumbai, July 6: After the recent lynching of five people over a WhatsApp rumour at Dhule in Maharashtra, the state cyber cell has come up with a few preventative measures to control such instances in future. According to PTI, the cyber cell has issued WhatsApp numbers where people can call to report any such fake messages or content which can trigger lynching incidents in their region.
Brijesh Singh, the special inspector general of police (cyber police) confirmed that they have started various helpline numbers in different parts of the state. Besides this, he added that they are also taking help of fact-checking websites such as SM HoaxSlayer, Boom Facts and ALT News to do a forensic analysis of the fake news.
Furthermore, radio jingles will be aired on different radio platforms and short advertisements on television channels will be widely broadcasted to educate and create awareness among the citizens. "We have put 1,000 hoarding across the state, giving local WhatsApp number," Singh said.

Another cyber official Balasingh Rajput stated that those who will found spreading rumours and creating tension among communities will be charged under Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. Also, those accused of lynching will be booked under murder charges.
