Bhind, March 26: A journalist who was investigating illegal sand mining cases in Bhind district in the state of Madhya Pradesh was killed after a dumper ran over him, reported ANI. The name of the journalist was Sandeep Sharma and he was working for a national TV news channel.

According to reports, the journalist had earlier informed police about the threat to his life. In fact, he had accused a police officer of being involved in the illegal sand mining cases and of helping the sand mafias, reported The Times of India. It has now been established beyond proof that the journalist had informed the police about the threat to his life:

This is not the first time that a journalist has been killed in the line of duty. According to the not-for-profit organization, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), between 1992 and 2017, 28 journalists were murdered in events linked to their work. In the latest World Press Freedom Index, India ranked 133 among 180 countries profiled. The report had also mentioned that India is the third most dangerous country for journalists in the world after Iraq and Syria.
