New Delhi, July 29: Flyers may now need to take out their wallets, mobile phones any electronic item from handbags to be screened separately at airports, according to a Times of India report. Till now flyers are required to keep their laptops, tablets in trays for screening, but soon it may not be the case. People flying out of Delhi in the past few weeks have been told to abide by the new rules and according to a CISF officer mentioned in the report, the same is being done across all the airport for quicker security clearances.

The officer quoted in the report said, “During scanning handbags, the screen shows a lot of clutter in bags. In case of a jumbled picture, screeners request removal of other electronic items and chargers. Pens are checked for knives if they are heavier or look different. In cases of doubt, we need to check those bags manually. This slows down processing time. Removing these things will help speed up handbag screening." Reportedly, boards will be put up at pre-embarkation security checks (PESC) points telling people to remove anything that is not allowed inside the aircraft. A lot of times, people by mistake get things like scissors, knives that are not allowed inside the aircraft, this leads to unnecessary long queues and delays the entire process.

This new move is expected to be more hassling for commuters and in the initial few months, people will take time to understand the new rules. The Airport Authority of India (AAI), is looking out for options of 3D tomography used in the US and UK, which does not require passengers to unpack their laptops and other items for security checks, according to an ET report.
