Mumbai, June 27: The heart of a 42-year-old brain-dead man from Mumbai was transported through a green corridor reportedly to a 53-year old woman in Delhi Fortis Hospital. The organ was aerially transported through the green corridor to Delhi airport, and later through roadways to Fortis hospital. Currently, the doctors are carrying out the operation.

As per the news report in the Times of India, the official spokesperson stated,"A green corridor was created between Mumbai and Delhi airport to transport the heart to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI), Okhla. The recipient is suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively. And therefore, a heart transplant was suggested."

As per reports, the heart was transported within two-and-a-half hours. The heart was dispatched at 5: 07 pm, and it reached the hospital at 5: 30 pm. The  IGIA-NH8-RTR-Munirka-Malviya Nagar-Nehru Place-FEHI route was taken to transport the heart. The official spokesperson added, "The male donor had suffered serious injuries in a road accident and was declared brain dead at Global Hospital in Mumbai. The heart was then airlifted at 3: 15 pm from the Mumbai airport and reached the Delhi airport at 5: 05 pm, after that the heart was transported to the hospital."

Furthermore, a green corridor of 23-minutes was also made from Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi up to the Fortis Hospital to avoid any traffic hurdle.

A similar green corridor was made to transport a heart from Augurabad airport to Mumbai to a four-year-old a few-day ago, where a distance of 323.5 km was covered in one hour thirty-four minutes. In this case, the deceased donor was a 13-year-old boy who had met with an accident. His live heart was retrieved in Aurangabad’s MGM Hospital and transported to Mumbai's Fortis Hospital for  the surgery.

In the Delhi case, a team of doctors under the supervision of Z S Meharwal, Director, Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery, of Fortis Hospital, have been performing the surgery. Meharwal applauded the authorities and was quoted as saying,"It is commendable that a live heart was retrieved and transported within such a short span of time. Such examples of swift coordination give us immense confidence."
