Mumbai, October 2: The Nation celebrates the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today. October 2 also marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Days after top United States officials claimed that India has sent feelers seeking a new bilateral trade agreement with Washington, President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed the development. Referring to New Delhi as 'tariff king', Trump said the White House received a call from the Indian government, seeking immediate negotiations for the new agreement.

International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde on Monday appointed Indian-origin Harvard University professor Gita Gopinath as the chief economist of the international organisation. Gita Gopinath will replace outgoing chief economist Maury Obstfeld in December. Born in India, Gita Gopinath is a US citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India.
