In a bid to encourage the hiring of women and keeping them employed during their maternity period, the government on Thursday made it clear that it will bear the cost of 7 out of 26 weeks of the maternity leave. The Women and Child Development ministry on Thursday confirmed the government’s decision and it will give the employers the salaries for seven weeks of the 26 weeks of maternity leave for women earning more than Rs 15,000 a month. It covers the government as well as the private sector.

Protesters have gathered outside Cochin International Airport. Trupti Desai, the founder of Bhumata Brigade, has arrived at the airport from Pune. She had written to Kerala CM seeking security for her visit to Sabarimala Temple on 17 November.

Some big developments that are expected to happen today are:

Cyclone Gaja made a landfall in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu at around 1:40 am last night, with rains lashing the coastal areas especially Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur, over 75,000 people were evacuated, taken to relief centres. Petrol and diesel prices in Delhi today are Rs 77.10 per litre (decrease by Rs 0.18) and Rs 71.93 per litre (decrease by Rs 0.16), respectively. Petrol and diesel prices in Mumbai are Rs 82.62 per litre (decrease by Rs 0.18) and Rs 75.36 (decrease by Rs 0.17), respectively.
