The Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari made the announcement on Thursday after a meeting of the moon-sighting committee here, a senior official at the city's historic mosque said. "The moon was not sighted today. So, that means the Eid will be celebrated on Saturday in Delhi and several other parts of the country," he told news agency PTI.
Earlier today, people were seen offering Namaz at Delhi's Jama Masjid on Saturday while people in several states were seen greeting each other on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. The festival marks the end of the fasting month of Ramzan, symbolises peace and brotherhood.
President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has greeted fellow citizens on the eve of Idu’l Fitr. In his message, the President has said, “On the auspicious occasion of Idu’l Fitr, I offer my greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens, and especially to our Muslim brothers and sisters in India and abroad. The culmination of the holy month of Ramzan is a moment of celebration. May it promote fraternity and understanding in our shared society”.
The Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu greeted people of the nation on the joyous occasion of Id-ul-Fitr. In a message, he said that Id-ul-Fitr marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan and signifies the traditional expression of brotherhood and understanding between people. May this festival bring peace, harmony and prosperity in our country, he added. “I convey my heartiest greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the joyous occasion of Id-ul-Fitr.
The festival is marked with feasts and the faithful offers prayers at mosques and idgahs to seek blessings of the divine. People, especially children dress up in their traditional fineries to mark the festival that spreads the message of brotherhood and communal amity.
