The Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018, has been passed in the Rajya Sabha. The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill 2018 empowers authorities to attach and confiscate properties as well as assets of economic offenders like loan defaulters who flee the country. The demand for the Ordinance grew after Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Chowski, among others, allegedly caused massive scams and defaulted on loans by banks and fled from India. The Madras High Court has ordered DVAC (Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption) to soon finish the probe against Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam & family in a disproportionate assets case. Advocate General Vijay Narayan, appearing before the Madras High Court on Tuesday, informed the court that an investigation into the allegations of amassing wealth has been initiated. The Maratha Kranti Morcha, an umbrella group comprising of nearly two dozen pro-Maratha reservation groups, have issued a bandh call today in parts of western Maharashtra, including the state capital Mumbai and the adjoining regions of Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Raigad.
