Aizawl, June 5: At least ten people, including six women were killed last night after landslide struck parts of Meghalaya's Lunglei town. The deaths were caused after a semi-pucca two-storey building was swept away in the calamity.

At least 14 people were residing in the ill-fated building. Among the casualties caused, seven of a family who resided on the ground floor died, along with three others who lived on the first floor.

The landslide was triggered after incessant downpour in Meghalaya over the past couple of days. The Lunglei District Disaster Response was pressed into action after the building collapse was reported. Four among the residents of the building were rescued, with one sustaining serious injuries, the local police said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning of severe rainfall in the Northeastern states on Monday. The weather-assessment body has asked states to take precautionary measures as the rainfall in most regions will be combined with thunderstorm and lightning.

In the thunderstorms reported last week in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, 20 people had lost their lives. The fatalities were primarily caused due to tree-felling incidents.

Rainfall-related deaths were also reported from Mumbai on Sunday, when four people in Bhandup were electrocuted to death.
