Guwahati, October 8: The newly elected Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Kripanath Mallah received a grand welcome when he reached his own constituency Ratabari in Karimganj on Sunday morning. His supporters had arranged an elephant ride, but Mallah when he sat atop the elephant, it refused to move, and within few seconds, the Deputy Speaker fell off from the elephant. He was unhurt in the incident. The video has gone viral on social media. Three-time Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Mallah was elected unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly. He was declared uncontested by Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami.

The position of the deputy Speaker had fallen vacant after Dilip Paul, also of BJP, had resigned a few months back, citing personal reasons.
