Kolkata, June 4: Prominent Kolkata businessman Shibaji Roy, who headed the city's leading sanitary chain, died on spot after the Ferrari which he was driving rammed into the Pakuria flyover guardrail.

Roy, director of M. L. Roy & Co. Sanitations Pvt Ltd -- one of the oldest sanitation solutions company in West Bengal -- was returning from a morning joy drive with a group of friends and family members on Sunday.

The accident was reported from Pakuria flyover, located near Domjur in Howrah on NH-6 -- 22-km away from Kolkata. The mishap was caused after a truck in front of the deceased's car suddenly slowed down, which compelled Roy to take a sharp right turn, and eventually ram into the guardrail.

The Rs 3.13 crore Ferrari got crushed under the flyover rails, with the iron bar piercing through the engine and striking the chest of Roy. Eyewitnesses claim Roy was alive for nearly one hour at the spot and kept pleading for help. Although locals and police officials had reached the spot, the rescue was delayed as his body could not be pulled out of the vehicle in the absence of metal cutters.

After he was brought of the car using a crane, Roy was rushed to the nearest medical facility where he was declared dead on arrival.

The sanitary ware scion is survived by his mother, wife, son and younger brother. His father had passed away two-and-a-half months ago.

Howrah (Rural) SP Gaurav Sharma said the police is probing all angles of the case. An operation has also been launched to identify the truck whose slowing down mid-way led to the mishap, he said, adding that the "over-speeding" of the deceased driver is also being looked into. Reports claim Roy was riding at 120 km/hr when the Ferrari rammed into the guardrail.
