Kolkata, Sep 2: As many as 14 skeletons of babies wrapped in plastic bags were found at an abandoned plot in South Kolkata's Haridebpur area on Sunday afternoon. The skeletons were recovered when workers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation were cleaning the plot which a real estate company had recently purchased. The bodies wrapped in plastic bags were found on the grassy land on Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani under the Haridebpur Police station area.

“Some abortion racket operating nearby could be behind it. Some of the bodies appeared to be in a semi-decomposed state, while a few were fully decomposed," a senior officer of Kolkata Police told PTI. “We have no clue where from they (the bodies) have come. Going by circumstantial evidences, it seems that they were dumped there as the land was lying abandoned,” the officer added.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee,  Commissioner of Police Rajeev Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Praveen Tripathi and Deputy Commissioner of South West Division Nilanjan Biswas visited the spot on receiving information. The city mayor said a thorough search of the entire areas, including nearby waterbodies, will be conducted to see if there are more bodies.

"Condition of skeletons can be determined only after postmortem. We'll investigate. We're also checking the CCTV footage in the area. A complete search will be done tomorrow morning," Nilanjan Biswas, DC (Behala), told ANI.
