Jammu, June 30: Talib Hussain, a man who led the protest seeking justice into the gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, has been booked for alleged domestic violence. Talib is a social activist and an advocate. He has also been charged for attempting to kill his wife over dowry.

According to a report published in Indian Express, the FIR was registered after a preliminary inquiry by the police into the complaint of Talib’s wife Nusrat Begum. Shabnam Sheikh, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, directed an inquiry in the matter on Thursday.

Talib had married Nusrat in 2015. The couple has two children. The police said that Nursrat’s father, Mohammad Tahir and neighbours brought a written complaint along with the court order to the police. “The FIR was registered after the neighbours told the police that Nusrat had been living along with her two minor daughters at Tahir’s home since her husband allegedly physically assaulted her for dowry,” reported Indian Express quoting Samba SSP Anil Magotra as saying.

The police will first record Nusrat’s statement before a judicial magistrate under Section 164 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) before taking action against Talib. According to the reports, the social activist has been booked under various provisions of RPC, including domestic violence, demanding dowry, threatening to divorce his wife and even attempting to murder her. His brother has also been booked for molestation and attempting to intimidate.

Talib along with Deepika Singh Rajawat had become the face of the agitation. The eight-year-old child belonging to a nomadic minority community was allegedly kidnapped on January 10. She was gangraped and later killed on January 14.
