Chennai, July 27: The health condition of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi deteriorated on Thursday, with politicians across partyline visiting the Kauvery Hospital to meet him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said he spoke to Karunanidhi's son MK Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi and wished quick recovery for the ailing DMK leader.

Karunanidhi, 94, was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital for a tracheotomy review procedure for replacement of tube last week. The former chief minister of Tamil Nadu is currently suffering from fever due to Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and is being treated at his residence in Gopalapuram. AIADMK leaders including deputy chief minister O Pannerselvam visisted him yesterday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Kauvery Hospital's Executive Director Aravindan Selvaraj said there has been a slight decline in Karunanidhi's health due to age-related ailments. "He is currently being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection with intravenous antibiotics and fluids. He is being monitored and treated round the clock by a team of medical and nursing professionals, who are providing hospital-level care at his home," Selvaraj said.

He said considering Karunanidhi's health condition, the doctors attending on him have strongly advised restriction of visitors. Incidentally, Thursday marks 49 years since Karunanidhi took charge as the DMK president. He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time in 1969.
