Chennai, Aug 8: The Madras High Court has adjourned hearing on a petition seeking permission to bury M Karunanidhi near Amma Memorial at Marina Beach. The hearing will resume at 8:00 am today when the Tamil Nadu government will file its reply. During the hearing, the state government sought more time to submit its answer. The mortal remains of Karunanidhi will soon be kept at Rajaji Hall for public viewing.
The Tamil Nadu government rejected DMK's request to allot space for burying the mortal remains of Karunanidhi near party founder C N Annadurai's memorial at the Marina Beach. In a statement, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said the state government is ready to allocate two acres land for Karunanidhi's burial near Gandhi Mandapam on Sardar Patel Road.
Earlier, family members of Karunanidhi and a DMK delegation led by M K Stalin met Chief Minister K Palaniswami and sought space near Annadurai's memorial for burying Karunanidhi's body. Congress president Rahul Gandhi and superstar Rajinikanth urged the state government to provide land at Marina Beach for Karunanidhi's burial.
A five-times Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi died after battling age-related ailments at Kauvery Hospital on Tuesday evening. He was 94. "With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi at 6:10 pm. Despite the best possible efforts by a team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond." the hospital said in a statement.
