Kalwa Saket Bridge in Thane Develops Cracks Amid Heavy Rains in Mumbai, Commuters Experience Tremors
This comes just days after a portion of the Andheri Road Over Bridge(ROB) named Gokhale collapsed.
Mumbai, July 19: Kalwa Saket bridge, one of the prominent routes connecting Thane to Navi Mumbai, has developed cracks amid heavy rains in Mumbai. Commuters said that they felt a few tremors on the bridge. The traffic movement on the bridge has been slowed down amid safety concerns. According to an official from Thane's Disaster Management Cell, the vehicles are moving in batches of 50 vehicles at a time. The bridge has not been shut down, but the movement of the vehicles is being watched carefully. Traffic police constables have also been deployed to help commuters in cars and motorists.
The official, while speaking to LatestLY, added that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) bridges department officials have been informed about the tremors that were experienced at the Bridge. Once the officials visit the site and conduct an inspection, it will then be decided whether to allow traffic movement or shut down the bridge.
This comes just days after a portion of the Andheri Road Over Bridge(ROB) named Gokhale collapsed. The mishap took one life and left four others injured. After the Gokhale ROB collapse, currently, only light vehicles are being allowed to ply, while the Ghatkopar Pant Nagar's ROB connecting east and west also developed cracks and is in a dangerous condition due to heavy rains. After complaints about Pant Nagar ROB, the bridge was closed but later, only the pathways meant for pedestrians was kept closed to avoid any untoward accident.
