Jwala Gutta Tweets Against Kathua Gangrape! Shockingly Nation's Pride Gets Trolled With Lessons on Nationalism
Gutta was soon attacked by a barrage of tweets accusing her of demeaning the country and its people.
The rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kathua resulted in widespread outrage on social media and protests across the nation. Among people who expressed dismay on Twitter was badminton player Jwala Gutta. Replying to Bollywood playback singer Caralisa Monteiro's tweet on the brutal crime, Gutta wrote, "I am disheartened by rapes everywhere everyday...maybe u should too feel the same![sic]"
The sportswoman was soon attacked by a barrage of tweets accusing her of demeaning the country and its people. Some even questioned her nationalism. She was attacked for her way of criticising the crime with tweets questioning her loyalty towards the nation. A furious Gutta tweeted to a Twitter user saying, "Hey a*****e....protest is against rape right? My way is my way!!!"[sic]. However, the pointless argument trying to change the direction of the talk with ignorant debates continued.
Meanwhile, Gutta also received immense support on social media for talking on the incident in which the minor girl was gangraped. She later replied saying, "To my surprise never thought I would be criticised for protesting RAPE! Quite a pathetic time we r living in!![sic]".
Here is what Jwala Gutta tweeted:
Tweets with no rationalism from trollers continued:
Meanwhile, tweets poured in for the badminton player for taking on trolls with courage. Here are some of them:
Like Gutta said, it is unfortunate to see a tweet against rape (like it should be) being subjected to unnecessary scrutiny from social media. Rape is an age-old crime and has occurred irrespective of governments changing. People with irrational opinion fail to understand the need to talk and act against it.
We are definitely as a nation saddened and ashamed that an innocent life was killed and there is no stringent punishment (capital punishment for child rapist was implemented later) against the criminals. While that is the hapless story of one eight-year-old, the number of people being raped and subjected to sexual harassment in the country is alarming.
Gutta is a fourteen-time National Badminton Championship in doubles. She won a bronze at the 2011 BWF World Championships and gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. For her achievements, in 2011, she was bestowed with the Arjuna Award, India's second highest sporting award. She is known for having brought recognition for doubles badminton in India.
