New Delhi, Mar 20: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Atul Johri, who was arrested earlier in the day on charges of sexual harassment, has been granted bail by Delhi's Patiala House court.
Johri, while being produced before the bench of magistrate Ritu Singh, submitted his bail application, claiming that his career would be ruined if he is sent to jail without his guilt being proven in the courtroom.
Johri, a faculty member of the Life Science Department, was booked by the Delhi Police on Monday, based upon the FIR registered by one of the eight female students who were allegedly harassed by him sexually.
The JNU student union had launched a protest in the campus and the vicinity late on Monday, accusing the police of deliberately avoiding the arrest of Johri due to his alleged political links.
Earlier in the day, JNU students protested outside the Vasant Kunj Police Station, where the complaint has been registered against the teacher. Apart from the students, activists affiliated to the All India Democratic Women’s Association and All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan joined the protest, seeking his immediate arrest.
