Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chief Yasin Malik has been arrested on Thursday to prevent him from leading any protests against the civilian killings in the last couple of weeks, according to a report in the Greater Kashmir. Police arrived at Malik's residence and have detained him.
Reportedly, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a protest shutdown against the killing of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and several civilians in the Valley. Malik will thus not be able to join the protest.
According to an IANS report, shops, public transport, other businesses and educational institutions have remained shut at most places while attendance in banks, post offices and government offices was thin due to non-availability of public transport. Private transport and some three wheelers, however, moved in uptown areas of Srinagar. Rail services have also been suspended as a precuationary measure. Other cities and towns in the Valley have also been affected with the shutdown.
Reports from other cities and towns in the Valley also indicate that the shutdown derailed normal life there too. On June 14, Shujaat was killed along with two of his security guards in Press Enclave. On Tuesday, a major political drama unfolded as BJP broke their alliance with PDP in Jammu & Kashmir. Post that, CM Mehbooba Mufti and other PDP leaders resigned. On Wednesday, there is imposition of the Governor's rule in the state.
