Srinagar, Feb 2: Three soldiers were killed and one survived with injuries after an avalanche struck an Army post in North Kashmir's Kupwara. The deceased have been identified as Havaldar Kamlesh Kumar, Naik Balbeer and Sepoy Rajinder, whereas, another soldier Sepoy Bipin is said to be stable, but will remain hospitalised.

The avalanche, reports said, struck at 4:30 pm at Sona Pandi Gali (SPG) in Machil sector along the Line of Control (LoC). The four soldiers, belonging to the 21 Rajput Regiment, went missing after the avalanche attack.

The local medical facility, where they were rushed to after being found, referred them to the 92 base hospital in Srinagar's Badami Bagh. However, two among the deceased succumbed to death while being shifted, whereas, another died on reaching the hospital.

The avalanche attacks have proved to be fatal for Army personnel deployed at strategic border posts in the winter months. In December, five soldiers deployed at the Army post in Bandipora went missing after an avalanche hit the region.

The most lethal avalanche was witnessed in January 2017 in Gurez sector, when 24 Indian soldiers were killed.

North Kashmir faces the maximum impact of avalanches. In Kupwara last month, a total of 11 people, including a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officer, were killed after an avalanche struck in the Tangdhar sector.
